Saint Petersburg is a city, where various architectural styles harmonize perfectly, the northern capital of Russia, cultural and business centre of Europe. St. Petersburg is located at the estuary of the Neva River, and across the island of its delta on the coast of the Finnish Gulf of the Baltic Sea. From May 25-56 and till July 16-17 you can enjoy magnificent White Nights on the bank of the Neva River that last over 50 days. Territory of the city is 606 sq km, and 1439 sq km with the suburbs. According to the last census that took place in 1997, there are around 5 millions people in St. Petersburg. The ensemble of embankments (Kutuzovskaya, Dvortsovaya, and Angliyskaya) has been taking shape for three centuries, reflecting the historical event in the architecture of the city. Nevsky Prospect is the mail thoroughfare of the city (4,5 km long). This avenue is one of the most beautiful and comfortable streets of Europe; a focus of cultural, social and religious life of St. Petersburg. The Vasilievsky Island is the biggest island in the estuary of Neva River (1090 hectares). The complex of the Stock Exchange buildings with the monumental Rostrum Columns, is one of the principle architectonic symbols of St. Petersburg. At present time the Peter and Paul Fortress is a museum town with numerous memorial places and expositions.
