Bolshoi Theatre (Bolshoi Academic Theatre)

World-renowned for its opera and ballet. Built in 1824 by architect O.I. Bove on the site of Old Petrovskiy Theatre restored in 1856 by A. Kavos after the fire. From the very outset of its existence the Bolshoi Theater was in the center of Moscow cultural life. The State Academic Bolshoi Theater is one of the oldest in the capital of Russia. It was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century and officially opened in 1825. According to the opinions of the contemporaries, the theater was the best in Europe. The troupe of actors that was invited to perform on the stage of the theater formed earlier, in 1776, and that year is recognized as the year of the theater s foundation. The Bolshoi main stage is currently closed for 3 year reconstruction. All the performances are carried out on the New stage - the building is adjacent the Bolshoi theatre and is designed in the same way.

Moscow Circus

Moscow Circus is well known all over the world. Circus artists perform over fifty specialized acts, ranging from clowning, juggling and aerial gymnastics to bear and porcupine training acts. Performances are held at the Great Moscow State Circus on a daily basis with matinees starting at 3pm and night performances starting at 7pm.



Novaya Opera (New Opera)

Once, about 10 years ago, talented conductor Evgeny Kolobov made up his mind to organize his own opera theatre. Kolobov's offspring got a new luxurious place in the "Hermitage" garden. It is a perfect place for opera performances. The building itself of the New Opera is a real masterpiece of national architecture of last years. After the reconstruction of 1993-1998 "Hermitage" garden got its original form of a landscape ensembly typical for Russia of XIX-XX.


Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenco Musical Theatre

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre was founded in 1941 when two companies directed by the legendary reformers of twentieth-century theatre — Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko — were merged: the Stanislavsky Opera Theatre (established at the end of 1918 as an Opera Studio of the Bolshoi Theatre) and the Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre (set up in 1919 as a Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre). The new theatre followed the artistic principles of its founders, who applied the system of the Moscow Art Theatre to opera and ballet.



In 1990 Dmitry Bertman established the Helikon Opera theatre in Moscow, which was awarded State status in 1993 and soon joined the ranks of Russia's leading opera houses. Construction of the Helikon-Opera has been developed for the historical part of the city. The present location of the theater is on the territory of an old Moscow manor, which enjoys the status of the monument of culture of federal importance.



International House of Music

Moscow International Performance Arts Center – also known as Moscow International House of Music on Red Hills – opened its halls for guests and performers in March 2003. In December 2004 the biggest organ in Russia was installed in the Svetlanov hall. Guests and performers of the House of Music are impressed with the graceful architecture of the venue.


Moscow Conservatory

Moscow Conservatory is a late 18th century manor house built to the design of Vasily Bazhenov for Princess 'Ekaterina Dashkova. In 1894 the building was almost entirely torn down. In 1901 architect VE Zagorsky rebuilt the building so that it could house the conservatoire using elements of Dashkova manor.

50 dancers on stage, masterly technique, outstanding acting, 15 reincarnations, 10 tons of freight, 600 unique costumes, 300 items of props, 8 sets changes – this is the fabulous reality of "The Russian National Dance Show "Kostroma" that captivates the audience of all ages and nationalities.

There are more than 80 theatres, including the Mariinsky opera and ballet theatres known for the whole world, the Academic Bolshoy drama theatre, the Academic theatre named after M.P. Musorgsky in the city. Every year a lot of the musical and theatrical festivals, fairs and exhibitions take place in Saint Petersburg.

International festival of the classical music “White nights’ stars” takes place in Mariinskiy Theatre from May to July. Many other concerts and cultural events are held in the framework of the winter festival “Art Square” and the project called “White days’.

Besides visiting theatres and classical concerts there is a set of other entertainments both for adults and for youth in Saint Petersburg. Various kinds of entertainments are offered here. Mariinsky Opera House

The opera and ballet companies are famous the world over. The repertoire includes classical productions such as “Giselle”, “Lucia di Lammermoor”, “Lohengrin” and works by Mozart, Verdi and Rossini. The Mariinsky Theater, named in honor of Maria Fedorovna, the wife of Emperor Alexander II, was built by architect Cavos in 1859-1860. The building was constructed on Teatralnaya Square, and since then the square was recognized as the center of the cultural life of Saint Petersburg. The hall of the Mariinsky Theater is one of the most beautiful in the world. It is decorated with splendid three-circled chandelier and vivid plafond, designed by master Frachioli, famous curtain by Alexander Golovin, and gilded decorations and statues.

Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory Opera and Ballet House

Formerly the Conservatory’s opera studio. N. Dolgushin’s ballet productions are particularly popular — “The Nutcracker”, “The Sleeping Beauty” and “Giselle”. Also of interest are Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” and “Swan Lake”.



Alexandrinsky Theatre

Since 1832 Russian State Drama Theatre has resided in a magnificent building (built by the project of a prominent architect Karl Rossi) in the very heart of Nevsky prospekt in Saint Petersburg. The building was called Alexandrinsky Theatre (in honour of the spouse of emperor Nikolay the First, Alexandra Fedorovna) and since then the name of Alexandrinsky theatre has been tightly bound to the world history of stage art. A unique ensemble of buildings with a 5-circle auditorium, huge stage, festive palace foyers, grand facade, which turned into one of the emblems of the Northern Capital, entered the list of world architecture masterpieces, registered by UNESCO.

Bolshoi State Saint Petersburg Circus

The circus located in Fontanka River Embankment was opened on the 26th of December, 1877. It was designed by architect Vasiliy Kenel and became the first stone circus in Russia. The magnificent building decorated with sculptural compositions was considered to be one of the best circus constructions in Europe. The arena of the circus witnessed splendid performances by the world-famous clowns, gymnasts, animal trainers and jugglers.


Hermitage Theatre

The former court theatre of the Winter Palace. The repertoire includes Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake” and gala concerts by ballet stars accompanied by the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. Ballet productions staged by prior application from tourist companies and other organisations.



Mikhailovsky Theatre

St. Petersburg’s second largest musical stage, whose repertoire includes world classics of opera and ballet. Among the works in the programme are the operas Verdi’s “Otello”, Bizet’s “Carmen”, Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” and the ballet “Cinderella” by Prokofiev. Originally St. Petersburg Mussorgsky State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater was called Mikhailovsky in honor of Emperor Nicolas I's brother. The permanent troupe of actors appeared only after the Social Revolution. That's when the theater got its own style and aesthetic credo. The theater attracted the audience with its unusual performances, as its actors were always searching for the new ways of performing. On the stage of the theater premieres of the operas by Prokofiev and Shostakovich took place. Famous Meyerhold staged several performances.

Classical quartet is playing lovely melodies of the XVIII century, welcoming guests at the Gala stairs of the Palace. The folk show itself is represented with 3 professional folk groups: "Peters Quartet" (vocal quartet): classical performance of folk songs, lyrical romances and Russian Orthodox hymns. "Maidan" is a Cossack song-and-dance group which skillfully reproduces on stage Cossack songs and dances in their original form. The «Stars of St.Petersburg» is a dance group. The dancers are graduated from leading schools of choreography in Russia. Its repertoire covers lyrical dances of the Russian North, fiering dances of the Cossacks from the Don and Voronezh, dancing miniatures of the Urals and Siberia with their subtle humor. The show consists of two parts (45 minutes each) and lasts for 1 hour 50 minutes including the break, when guests are offered some fruit, canapes with red caviar, ham, Russian style Salami, cheese, vodka, champagne, red wine, mineral water, juice, beverages.
