'Court Carriages of the 18th – early 20th centuries' exhibition

1 nov - 17 nov

A permanent exhibition of court carriages of the eighteenth - early twentieth centuries
The exhibition has been opened in the former Duty Stables building that was built in 1824 to a design by the architects Vasily Stasov and Smaragd Shustov.
The display features 24 imperial conveyances created by eminent Russian and Western European craftsmen.
Today the display includes a variety of conveyances: coaches, phaetons, cabriolets and sledges that were used in the 1700s and 1800s for grand parades and coronations – the imperial court’s most magnificent ceremonies.
Three coaches made for Empress Catherine II by the celebrated St Petersburg carriage-builder Johann Konrad Bukendahl are striking for their immense size, opulent gilded carving and rich interior decoration. No less remarkable in terms of craftsmanship are the vehicles from the middle of the nineteenth century that were produced by the Court Carriage Establishment. Exceptional interest is aroused by the ten coaches created for the coronation of Emperor Alexander II by St Petersburg manufacturers: Christian Tatzki, the Froebelius brothers and the Yakovlev brothers.
The Tsarskoye Selo collection also includes fine vehicles from Karl Nellis’s factory and uniquely constructed coaches made by Ivan Bräutigam’s factory. A special place in the collection is taken by the vehicle in which Emperor
Alexander II was riding when he was fatally wounded on 1 March 1881.
The last hall of the display contains sledges that were as richly decorated and skilfully made as other grand vehicles. Among them is a sledge that belonged to Emperor Paul I and a ten-seater sledge that Johann Konrad Bukendahl made in 1793 for the ladies of Catherine II’s court.

Exhibition “Matilda Kshesinskaya: Fouettes of Fate”

1 nov - 17 nov

An exhibition "Matilda Kshesinskaya: Fouettes of Fate" is designed to provide a full overview of the personal and creative biography of the famous ballerina of the Silver Age who left a significant footprint in Russian art.
Matilda F. Kshesinskaya is not only a synonym of Russian ballet at the turn of the 20th century, but also was a significant personality in the life of high society and culture of St.Petersburg in the last decades of the Russian Empire.
Today, she is of interest to us as a one-of-a-kind phenomenon encompassing many significant events in the cultural and political history of Russia. Her affair with the future Emperor Nicholas II, and love and business relationships with the Grand Dukes Sergei Mikhailovich and Andrei Vladimirovich caused a lot of innuendo, spawning the most fantastic rumors and gossip. There are still controversial opinions not only about the personality of Matilda Kshesinskaya, but also about the sources of her huge wealth — before 1917, Kshesinskaya was one of the richest women in Russia.
This is not the first time that the Museum of Political History of Russia pays attention to Matilda Kshesinskaya. What is distinguishing about the new exhibition is that it aims to show her personal and creative life as much as possible freed from myths and secrets, and uses a large number of new archive sources, including those being exhibited for the first time. The exhibition reveals different dimensions of the multi-faceted personality of Matilda Kshesinskaya, showing her as an outstanding ballerina, socialite, mother, wife, lady and businesswoman.

From Maryino manor to France

1 nov - 17 nov

September 12 at the gallery "Petersburg artist" with the support of the General  Consulate of France in St. Petersburg and the association "Cultural crossroads" held a closed presentation of the Russian-French charity project. Russian artists presented over one hundred sketches and paintings created in the Loire Valley, North Normandy, as well as in the park Maryino estate.

The presentation has launched a new mobile project - painting exhibition, which was formed two years cooperation between Russian and French sides. The exhibition presents about a hundred paintings, created in places where worked Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Vasily Polenov, Konstantin Korovin and other Russian and French painters.

Speaking of pictures, made in France, it is worth noting the changing landscape of professional tasks. Accustomed to the muted colors of mother nature northern neighborhoods of the capital, in the Loire Valley and North Normandy, they opened the opportunity for creative experimentation. Bizarre and unusual details, effects of man-made natural forms, their bright light and saturated colors, have become the hallmarks of the architectural and park landscapes created in these places.

Quite a different impression is made Maryino manor studies. Architecture Palladian villa with typical northern rigor and restraint of color, plus the internal mood of the landscape and the appeal to the poetic reasons (winding paths, river, birch grove, secluded corner of the old park) - they were the foundation. These features have made exceptional charm and beauty, emphasizing the lyrical depth of the image in sketches.

«Secrets of the 18th century cuisine». Saint Petersburg Restaurant Festival - 2016

9 nov

Special excursion project Secrets of the 18th century cuisine as a part of the Saint Petersburg Restaurant Festival

The historic step in development of Russian national cuisine is associated with the reforms of Peter the Great, which were realized at the turn of the 17-18 centuries. During nearly 100 years until the early 19th century there was a division between lords’ and commonalty’s cuisines. Cuisine of the ruling class lost its national character. Russian aristocracy borrowed elements from Western European culture, everyday life, culinary traditions, and drastically changed the order of «Russian table» which was forming for centuries. Under the governance of Peter the Great and Anna Ivanovna Germany and Holland influenced on the order of «Russian table», and under Catherine II and Alexander I it was France. Having visited Europe rich nobles used to bring foreign chefs from abroad. In Catherine's epoch a tradition to build a kitchen separately from the palaces appeared. There were 2 directions in the culinary art –the local and the foreign one. It has become fashionable to turn a meal into «theater and masquerade».

- What does it mean «theatre and masquerade» in Russian meal?
 - Why did the 18th century become for Russia a century of French cuisine?
- Why did potato riots happen in Russia?
- Why was Russian cuisine highly valued in Europe along with the French in the end of the 18th and 19th century?
…And more interesting facts from the history of Russian national cuisine, you will learn visiting the Historical Theatrical Scale Model «Petrovskaya Akvatoria»
