Moonlit Night on the Dnieper and other masterpieces: Tretyakov Gallery to host the first 21 century Arkhip Kuindzhi exhibition

On 6 October, an exhibition of works by Arkhip Kuindzhi, one of the most prominent Russian artists of the 19th century, will open at the State Tretyakov Gallery. The last exhibition of his art was held in the gallery in 1992; back then, the exhibition mostly featured his completed works.

This time, gallery visitors will be able to see many more of his works.  The exhibition, which will be held at the gallery’s Engineering Building, will feature over 180 of Kuindzhi’s selected paintings, sketches and etudes. Apart from the works from the archives of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum, the collection also includes works from 19 major regional collections, a private collection, and archives of museums in neighbouring countries, namely Azerbaijan and Belarus.

The exhibition will offer visitors a fresh look at Kuindzhi’s works. This innovator artist is known for boldly using the colours that his contemporaries believed to be too provocative. His ideas were reflected in the works of his students: Nicholas Roerich, Arkady Rylov, Konstantin Bogaevsky, Ferdynand Ruszczyc and Nikolai Krymov.

Arkhip Kuindzhi created a different type of romantic landscape, which is based on a realistic perception of the world but is transformed with the help of the creative individuality of the artist. In his works, he combined classical landscape painting with Russian and European romanticism, the achievements of the French Barbizon school, the discoveries of impressionists and decorative theatricalisation.
