India! New art

India! NEW ART the most extensive exhibition of Indian contemporary art to ever be presented, will open at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow on 17 June and will be on view until 6 September 2020.  

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) and The State Tretyakov Gallery, at the initiative of the Indo-Russian Cultural Foundation have come together to bring for the very first time an exhibition on an unprecedented scale featuring around sixty cross-generational Indian artists, including leading internationally acclaimed figures alongside emerging, younger generation artists. 

The exhibition will be curated by Roobina Karode, Director and Chief Curator of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Delhi, Fiana Balakhovskaya and Sergey Fofanov from the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow with Zelfira Tregulov, Director of the State Tretykov Gallery supervising the project. 

The exhibition will feature works by artists including Nalini Malani, Vivan Sundaram, Bhupen Khakhar, Amar Kanwar, G. Ravinder Reddy, Mrinalini Mukherjee, Anita Dube, Shilpa Gupta, Dayanita Singh and Jitish Kallat, Rohini Devasher, among others. 

An associated programme of the exhibition will be held as part of the Extension.Индия festival, which will feature illustrated talks on the the history and development of the Indian art scene since India’s Independence in 1947. Video screenings, music and dance concerts by Indian artists and

 food festivals will take place at various venues in Moscow.

This festival was initiated by the Indo-Russian Cultural Foundation and the Triumph Gallery, Moscow, partnered by KNMA and the STG, and is supported by the Indian Embassy in Moscow, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of India and the Russian Embassy in New Delhi.  

The State Tretyakov Gallery, (STG, founded in Moscow in 1856), is the foremost museum in the world of Russian art. One of the largest museums in Russia, its 

holdings number more than 190,000 works of Russian art from XIth to XXIst century. Among these are icons  by Andre Rublev and masterpieces by Alexander Ivanov, Ivan Aivazovsky, Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel. One of the biggest world collection of Russian Avant-garde including works of Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall. Also The New Tretyakov Gallery features the most complete permanent exhibition of Russian art of the second half 20th century (Ilya Kabakov, Eric Bulatov) as well as recent contemporary art and regularly presents a changing programme of international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. 


The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA, founded in New Delhi in 2010 by Kiran Nadar) is a pioneering initiative in establishing a private museum on modern and contemporary art in India, dedicated to bringing visibility, accessibility and integrity to the diverse and simultaneous artistic practices prevalent in India and the subcontinent. It has over the years built an extraordinary collection that spans across the last hundred years. From the rare and distinguished paintings of MFHusain, FNSouza, SHRaza , Arpita Singh, Bhupen Khakhar, abstractions of VSGaitonde and Nasreen Mohamedi to multi –media installations by Nalini Malani, Vivan Sundaram, Ranbir Kaleka,Sheba Chhacchhi, to sculptural objects of Subodh Gupta, Bharti Kher, Sudarshan Shetty, Ravinder Reddy, KNMA has equally welcomed the best works in photography, video and 

animation and kinetic objects into its collection. KNMA is premised on the belief that museums are not merely repositories of objects or spaces to display art, but places of confluence, conversations and sustained dialogue.  

Indo-Russian Cultural Foundation was established in 2013 in London by Alex Popov, who was instrumental in bringing the “India – Jewels that Enchanted the World” exhibition to Moscow Kremlin in 2014 and since then is active in different art and cultural projects in India, Russia and other countries, promoting knowledge and cooperation between the two countries.
