A Different Beauty: The State Museum of Oriental Art to Mark its 100th Anniversary with Large Exhibition

The State Museum of Oriental Art will hold a major exhibition entitled “The Orient. A Different Beauty.” timed to coincide with the museum’s 100th anniversary. It will run from 31 October 2018 to 20 January 2019. Visitors will see over 400 exhibits, including costumes, decorations and household items as well as paintings and graphics.

The display is divided into several sections: “Central Asia”, “Islamic Countries”, “The Caucasus”, “China”, “Korea”, “Japan” and “Southeastern Asia”. Visitors will be able to see more than 400 exhibits displayed in all the six museum halls: paintings, graphic works, costumes, jewellery and handicrafts.

The exhibition is devoted to women in traditional culture, their role and understanding of beauty in general. Each country has its own canons of beauty which can vary dramatically in different parts of the world and different eras.

The costumes section will present ethnic and wedding dresses, headgear, caftans and famous Chinese shoes for foot binding. Earrings, bracelets, amulet cases, headpieces and belt sets will also be on display. These items will not only tell us about how women look, but also about their everyday lives, which by tradition was a well-kept secret from men.

In 2018, the State Museum of Oriental Art will be 100 years old. It is the only cultural centre in Russia specialising in the preservation, study and promotion of the art of Oriental countries and peoples. Over its century-long history the museum’s name has changed several times: Ars Asiatica, the Museum of Oriental Cultures, the State Museum of Oriental Peoples’ Art. Now its collection includes about 150,000 paintings, sculptures, graphic works and handicrafts.
