Lavender desserts, DJing and free tours: Don’t miss the first week of Flower Jam festival

The festival runs from 30 August through 9 September. suggests what guests can see and try at Flower Jam as early as this week.

The city is literally blossoming as it hosts the Flower Jam festival. This gala of gardens, bright colors and original cuisine has reached almost everyone: festival sites have opened in every area. Some feature original designer gardens – the work of the best landscape designers from all over the world. Visitors will have a chance to admire them through 9 September.

From the first days visitors will be offered a lot of interesting things: culinary lessons on recipes using flowers, flower arranging workshops, tours around Moscow, concerts and open training sessions with famous athletes. has compiled a list of the first week’s events that simply cannot be missed.

1 September Laboratory Experiments and Verses from the Silver Age

On Knowledge Day, themed classes will be held on Tverskoi Boulevard. Natural science labs will open at the Sergei Yesenin monument, where children will be told about physics, astronomy, biology, and chemistry. They will be shown safe but spectacular experiments. Scientific shows will be held on 1 and 2 September at 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm.

Other sites on Tverskoi Boulevard will display collections of exotic butterflies and insects, starry sky maps and physics instruments. Young gardening enthusiasts are welcome to lessons in a landscape design school. Designers will show them how to build their own small gardens, create mobile flower gardens and take proper care of plants.

Revolution (Revolutsii) Square will offer more green lessons for children. The kids will plant their own spicy greens and collect a bunch of chamomile at the local art-garden. At 3 pm, they will see “Sing, Jussi, Sing,” a Karlsson Haus Theatre production.

A lesson at the children's English Club will take place at 1 pm on Orekhovy Boulevard. The participants will be taught the names of the flowers in English. At 3 pm, theatre and film actor Vadim Michman will lead a flower arranging workshop. The Classic Collection ballet show will begin at the same time.

VDNKh will host sporting events. At 1 pm, the Pump Track Russia riders team will lead a workshop on the pump-track. Sochi Olympics parallel giant slalom medal winner Alyona Zavarzina will show useful exercises for snowboarders at the Fitness Zone at 6 pm.

A workshop to create a composition of potted plants with forest moss will begin on Tverskaya Square at 12 pm. The Kitchen pavilion guests will learn how to make original desserts - lemon cupcakes with cream peonies, basil jam with strawberries and unusual jellies.

The Saturday programme on Novy Arbat will be devoted to the Silver Age: it will feature music and a poetry recital by actress Anzhelika Markova and the Edelweiss jazz quintet. A walking tour, Green Belt on the White City, will start from the local tour desk at 7 pm; the participants will find out how the map of Moscow and its green zones have changed since the Middle Ages.

2 September: Hermitage Gardens Walks and Mint Jam

A Street Art design installations workshop will begin at 2 pm at 41 Profsoyuznaya Street. At the same time, instructors at the culinary studio will demonstrate how to make a cherry pie, smoothies at 4pm, and cherry delicacy ice cream at 6pm. At 5 pm, the Coffee Time Band will perform for guests.

At 12 pm, Mikhail Reznikov, international obstacle course racer, will talk about training for those who are into extreme sports, at VDNKh pavilion No 57.

Tverskaya Square will feature three workshops from 12 pm to 5.30 pm: Fruit Bouquet, Vegetable Bouquet, and Bouquet from the Garden in the Basket. The local culinary school will offer tutorials on vanilla cupcakes with cream sunflowers, mint jam, oregano tea and 3D jelly.

A walking tour from the tour desk on Novy Arbat at 5 pm will include Hermitage Garden and its environs.

The Flower Jam Festival is being held in the capital for the second time. Last year about 7.2 million people visited.
