Mechanical breams: Russia’s first aquarium with robotic fish

VDNKh is now home to a huge aquarium with mechanical breams measuring half a metre each.

Pavilion No 2 Robostation at VDNKh now has Russia’s first aquarium with robotic fish: five mechanical breams that look exactly like real ones.

Robotic fish are made of sealed waterproof plastic. They have silver scales covered with a stainless steel coat plus twinkling LED lamps. Each fish is 50 centimetres long, the same size as a real one.

The environment the fish live in is also very close to a natural one. The bottom of the huge 3,000-litre aquarium is covered with natural river gravel. A powerful filtering system provides for clear running water. Plans call for adding algae to the aquarium.

Each fish has a motion sensor which helps it notice and avoid obstacles such as algae, rocks and other fish. The natural environment was created to test this function. In addition to this, the fish can be fitted with underwater video cameras.  Mechanical fish can swim for 12 hours after being charged up and dive to a depth of five metres.

Robostation experts will tell visitors about the history of robotic fish and in which fields such technology can be used.

Pavilion No 2 also has a pancake-making robot that regularly takes part in city food festivals. Another robot, called Baxter, is famous for its ability to predict the outcome of sporting events. The oracle robot made some correct predictions during the Confederations Cup as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which took place in Russia between 14 June and 15 July. Those visitors who want to check their reaction time, can play football with a goalkeeper robot at the Robostation.

VDNKh combines innovations, advanced technology together with traditions. The exhibition centre is seeing the second stage of a large-scale renovation project which began in the spring of 2017. Several historical and architectural landmarks, including the Golden Spike fountain and the main entrance arch have been renovated. Improvements have been made at the central part of the exhibition complex area and on the square near the main entrance.  New facilities are being built, such as an educational centre in the Knowledge Park, a landscape park, and a large walking alleyway.
