100th anniversary: a subbotnik (community spring clean-ups) history exhibition opened in Nikolskaya Street

The exhibition 'Public Initiative. 100th Subbotnik Anniversary' started in Nikolskaya street, opposite the building of the Institute for History and Archives of the Russian State University for the Humanities. Until 15 April, visitors may view photos and documents from the holdings of the Main Archive Department of Moscow.

The exhibition tells about the history of subbotniks, starting from the very first one held on 12 April 1919, with 15 workers of Moskva-Sortirovochnaya engine-house engaged, up to the present day. Exhibits are placed on 10 thematic stands: Origins. Moskva-Sortirovochnaya engine-house'', "Reference point. 50 years later", "1919. Great initiative", "Join in fight against breakdown", ''Communist Labour Day", "In a collaborative effort", "Military weekdays and labour holidays", "Striving towards anniversaries and congresses", "Improving our city" and "Good traditions - new initiatives".

Among the earliest documents of the Archival Fund exhibited are appeals of organizations to the Subbotnik Bureau, information on the pre-arrangement of subbotniks in the Zheleznodorozhny District, minutes of meetings, instructions, labour force assignments. All of them are dated 1919. The exhibition also features works by famous photographers Pyotr Pavlov, Boris Yaroslavtsev, Yuri Korolev, Valentin Mastyukov, Viktor Budan, Mark Redkin. Pictures show Subbotnik volunteers of 1940-1984.

The exhibition opened within the framework of 'History of Russia in Archival Documents and Photographs. Exhibitions in Nikolskaya Street-2019' project. The exhibition was arranged by the Russian Historical Society, the National History Foundation with the Russian State University for the Humanities and the Main Archive Department of Moscow involved.
